How to use Professor Garfield-comic generator

Creating comics can be a fun way for students to develop their skills for planning a storyline. Comic creation is also a good way to get reluctant writers started on creating a story. Professor Garfield is a great website for creating your own stories: you can choose the characters, the props, the background and add speech bubbles. It is easy to use and you can save your work. Strahovnik & Mecava (2009) explain the benefits of storytelling when combined with technology, especially with Web 2.0 technology. As they see it, storytelling can help students develop communication skills as most of these tools facilitate the creation of user-generated content and its publication.

Are you ready to start creating your comic strip?

1) Access the following
site  http://www.professorgarfield.org/pgf_comics_lab.html#%C2%A0 and click on “Log in” to create your username and click on “done”. In this way, your comics will be saved under that username.

2)      Click on the option “begin with the comic creator and start building your first comic strip.”

3)      Click “Edit panel” and choose the characters you like.If you drag the upper right corner of each character, you can change its size. If you click on the arrow in the middle of the image, you can flip your character. If you want any changes, you can delete your characters by clicking on its upper left corner.

4)     You can add props and speech bubbles and change the background. You can also design  your own characters by clicking on“Expand character builder”.  When you are ready click on “done”.

5)     Once you have clicked on “done” you can edit the other panels.

6)     When your story is ready, you can save it, print it or save it as JPEG. Write a title to save your work.

Here is my sample.
